Tips on Jewellery to Match your Skin Tone

Friday 07 July 2017

Share:

While trends will naturally influence our choices, it’s important to wear jewellery that suits your skin tone, accentuates your features and illuminates your beauty. We're all very different, so choose with care! Remember to take advantage of our expert staff to help you figure out what will look amazing on you.

To determine your skin tone, find a spot where the veins are noticeable. For most people, their wrists are usually a good choice. If your veins appear blue or purple in colour, you have a cool skin tone. If your veins appear green in colour, you have a warm skin tone. If your veins appear blue in some areas and green in others, you have a neutral skin tone.

Cool skin tones look good against bright coloured stones such as red, blue, purple and green because they bring liveliness to cool skin. For warm skin tones try orange, brown, yellow and turquoise stones.

Silver looks fresh on a very pale skin.  Where as yellow gold can warm up a fair skin tone with red tones, giving it a sun-kissed look in the summer.

Rose gold looks great on lightly tanned pale skin and warmer skin tones. Silver will also glisten on your skin.

If you have olive skin or black skin, your one of the lucky few where just about anything will look amazing.

You should also consider your hair and eye colour when choosing jewellery, good stone colour choices can help to create that sparkle in your eyes.

Diamonds look great on everyone!!!

Ear-Piercing 'Dream Come True' for Chernobyl Girls

Thursday 06 July 2017

Share:

We had two very special visitors in the store this week. Fourteen year olds Larysa and Alesia from Belarus came in to have their

ears pierced, as part of ' a dream come true’ initiative.  The girls are here for a month with Adi Roche’s Chernobyl International

Charity for rest and recuperation.  When their host Mum, Kris, contacted us about the foster sisters wish, we were delighted

to oblige.

Having your ears pierced is a big deal for most teens, but this one was extra special. Kris originally met the girls when they were

housed together, but sadly they have been separated recently, so this opportunity to visit Ireland and to share this milestone

experience together means a great deal.  The girls are part of a group of 145 children visiting Ireland this Summer and we wish

them all the very best.

Keanes on TV3's Ireland AM

Tuesday 20 June 2017

Share:

Monday 19th June - Coffee in hand, it was an early start, arriving to TV3’s Ireland AM studios for 7am.  The sun was splitting the stones,

illuminating us all, and perfectly hiding any dark circles from under our eyes!  We were there to showcase a selection of Keanes jewellery

in Celia Holman Lee’s morning fashion segment.

Presenter Alan Hughes with Celia & Anne - Yolanda, Celia and Ann - Caroline our Mkting Mngr, with presenter Sinead Desmond

What a fantastic morning it was, with the ever-elegant Celia and her stylish models. This particular showcase featured Summer wedding looks

from Ella Marie’s boutique in Newcastle West and Connolly Man in Limerick.  Amid the flurry of hair and make-up, we paired up our chosen

jewellery with the outfits.  Everything was tried on, so we all knew the matches, and most importantly – all fastenings were figured out.

Confident there would be no delays when a model was called for quickly, there was plenty of time for a few giggles.

Yolanda prepares for her first look, opting for blush pink rose Gold Ti Sento earrings €229, and Ti Sento Bangle €499. She also wore the new

Daniel Wellington white Bondi watch €159, perfect for Summer. Ann, in red, tries another Ti Sento bracelet €299, and a striking Keanes

Necklace for €295. We first filmed some shots which would be used as teaser clips early in the in the show, showing viewers what treats were

coming up later.  The two long chatty segments were filmed live later in the morning.

Carat* London star drop Necklace €185 (Keanes code: 11-01-010), earrings €97 and bracelet €159.

This Carat* London star drop necklace was a huge hit, as it perfectly accentuated the low neck in the powder blue dress from Ella Maria's

boutique, which Yolanda showcased.  She wore a matching Carat* bracelet and earrings. We heard there were lots of texts into the show

about these pieces.

Watch fanatic Michael wore a Tissot Gent's Chronograph Black Dial Stainless Steel Watch, which he wanted to take home.  Luckily, he didn’t,

so it’s still available to buy.  It featured a subtle red trim around the dial which picked up the fleck of red in his outfit perfectly.  €395

(Keanes code  8241004)

Michael also wore a Michel Herbelin Gents Ikone Grande Watch €355 (Keanes Code: 60-12-008) with his more casual, French Riviera styled

outfit. This classic watch features an ultra slim case which gives it’s a subtle contemporary feel.  Another one  added to Michael’s wish list!

To top off this look, he wore a leather cord gent’s bracelet €195 (Keanes Code 2403009) and co-ordinating cufflinks.

Anne was striking in her navy stipe jumpsuit, which was set off perfectly by our Keanes sterling silver rope necklace €295

(Keanes code 17-01-100), drop earrings €129 (43-03-005), Ti Sento ring €169 (14-06-022) and bracelet €229 (14-03-217).

With her pink dress, Anne wore a Carat Snow Flower necklace €139  (11-01-017)

Celia herself wore a stunning Waskoll sapphire diamond pendent €2,475, a simple carat necklace €410

(Keanes Code 11-01-008), with her pink dress, and a set of stunning sparkling Carat stud earrings €200 (11-02-021).

Thanks Celia and Ireland AM xx

Until next time....

Friday 23 December 2016

Share:

Ten year old Zoe Reeves-Wasik from Caherline NS, Caherconlish was in Keanes Jewellers yesterday to place her winning Christmas Tree Topper on the Keanes Christmas Tree.  Zoe designed a stunning, very unique reindeer, made from a wellie boot!

This was the first year of the competition for primary school children in Limerick city and county.  The standard and creativity shown by the children was absolutely amazing.

Twelve other children joined her as runners up, a boy and a girl from each class category from 1st to 6th Class.   Each child received a very cool Swatch watch and a course there were plenty of selection boxes too!   And to show our appreciation to the grown-up helpers, Zoe’s Teacher and family received vouchers worth €250 to spend in Keanes.  A wonderful way to start Christmas!

If you’re in town, make sure to pop in and see Zoe’s reindeer which now adorns the top of Keanes Christmas tree.

Keanes Christmas Tree Topper 2016

Monday 12 December 2016

Share:

Keanes have a very important tree in their Limerick Shop right now, which is almost decked for Christmas. We’ve looked everywhere but seem to have lost our Christmas tree topper!

So, we’re going to ask the children of Limerick for some help – and of course, there will be prizes!

We are inviting students from First to Sixth Class to get involved by creating a new Christmas Tree Topper for us.

The lucky winner will have their topper adorn the Keanes tree in our Limerick store, AND receive a wonderful gift from Keanes.

The awards honour the best-designed and best-kept buildings in Cork City and suburbs, and are aimed at rewarding businesses and building care-takers for their efforts to protect, enhance and improve the city’s street scape. This significantly contributes to a public perception of the city as a vibrant and dynamic place to live, visit, invest and do business in.

The Cork Better Building Awards were presented by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Fergal Dennehy and President of Cork Business Association Pat O Connell, at a lunch in The River Lee Hotel on Friday November 11. Neil Prendeville from Red FM was MC on the day.

We were absolutely delighted to accept the award for Best in Retail 2016

Keane’s Jewellers on Oliver Plunkett Street is a late-Victorian, highly distinctive building with elaborate stucco work to the upper floors, decorative cast iron railings to the first floor cill level and intact, original, timber shopfront all maintained to an incredibly high standard. While its ground floor fenestration and entrance openings have been updated, it presents a vibrant and highly attractive shopfront onto Oliver Plunkett Street, winner of the Academy of Urbanism’s Great Street Award 2016.

Radio Kerry's 11 to 1 Club Keanes Best Customer Story Competition!

Tuesday 29 November 2016

Congratulations to Trish Healy, winner of the Best Keanes Customer Story competition & a €1,000 voucher for Keanes!

We were delighted to team up with Radio Kerry’s 11 to 1 Club to run a fantastic week-long competition to celebrate 50 years of Keanes in Killarney. We asked the people of Killarney to tell us their best Keanes customer story. One story was chosen each day and read out live on air. We are absolutely overwhelmed by the amazing response we received and we thoroughly enjoyed hearing all of the wonderful stories from our customers. Today, Trish’s story was read out live on air and she was presented with her €1,000 voucher by Paul Trant – Manager of Keanes Killarney.

You can read Trish’s story below…

“My experience at  Keanes is both a happy and a sad memory,

When my mother was 80 we decided as a family to get her a nice ring from all of us together. So, off I went to Killarney and into Keane's, I took my time picking out a ring I thought she would like, they were so helpful and friendly to me and when I finally decided on the ring they assured me that if my mother wanted to come in herself and pick something else there was no problem, they gave me the receipt and a gift receipt to put in with the ring.

On the 31st December 2011, we all got together and gave mam the ring.  She was delighted with it, BUT after a few days she felt it was too wide for her finger.  So, early January I took her into Keane's to change the ring, the staff were so helpful and kind to mam, they brought her out a chair and brought out different rings, necklaces and bracelets for her to look at.  She then decided on a necklace we brought it home but again after a few days decided NO this isn’t suiting me either.  Off to Keane's again, I felt embarrassed now going in again, but the management and the staff reassured me that they had no problem with us coming in again, they would prefer mam to have something she was happy wearing than to keep something that she did not like.

Eventually we settled on a different type ring, which mam really loved.

Sadly, mam passed away in September of 2013, but I now wear that ring every day.

I just think that the staff and management at Keane’s were so caring and thoughtful.”

January Birthstone

Wednesday 30 December 2015

January birthstone

Garnet, the birthstone for January, signifies eternal friendship and trust and is the perfect gift for a friend.  Garnet, derived from the word granatum, means seed, and is called so because of the gemstone's resemblance to a pomegranate seed.

References to the gemstone dates back to 3100 B.C., when the Egyptians used garnets as inlays jewellery. Garnet is the name of a group of minerals that comes in a rainbow of colours, from the deep red of the pyrope garnet to the vibrant green of tsavorites.  Today, the most important sources for garnet are Africa, Sri Lanka, and India.

An interview with Watchmaker Martin Murphy

Wednesday 09 September 2015

Share:

The Keanes staff profile focuses on our in-house watchmaker, Martin Murphy is based in our Cork store. He took time out of his busy day to talk all things watches.

What type of watches do you most like working on?

I like working on Mechanical /Automatic watches which are certified Swiss chronometers and include complications such as chronographs / power reserve / Time Zone functions / instantaneous day and date etc. such as Rolex Daytona, Rolex GMT, Breitling Navitimer,

Do you collect watches? What are your favourites?

I have a few unusual watches that I picked up over the years. My favourite is a mechanical Breitling chronometer stop watch with split seconds and retrograde hand allowing the time keeper to read multiple times without interruption. This actual watch was used to time the Dublin Horse show events before the introduction of electronic timing and it also has a one tenth of a second indicator hand which was pioneering for a watch up to 60 years old.

Have you always been passionate about watches and watchmaking? Where do you think this passion comes from?

I have to thank my career guidance teacher for scratching that itch, it was she who recognised that part of my brain and sent me to the Swiss institute of horology on a career trip that ended up with me going down that road.

What other watchmakers do you admire and why? Is there anyone in particular who stands out in your mind as having made a significant contribution to your knowledge and success?

Marc Golay a master watchmaker and founder of the Swiss institute of horology was my tutor when I started collage. He was an incredibly tough taskmaster but if one managed to survive the first year with him the watchmaking principles he instilled in you stayed with you for ever.

Brendan O Brien was my final year tutor and through his dedication to teaching the skills of watchmaking the collage was highly regarded by the prestigious watch brands that it gave everyone who graduated a great platform in securing employment with those companies.

The McGonigle brothers who also attended the collage around the same time as I have gone on to create their own watch brand of beautifully crafted bespoke prestigious watches with a distinctive Irish flair which have been lauded by the world of Swiss watchmakers.

How long does it take you to service and restore a watch?

For a standard automatic watch with a calendar such as a Rolex Datejust it takes approx. 5 to 6 hours for a complete service from Start to finish. This process includes totally dismantling the movement replacing all worn parts, cleaning the dismantled movement in a special cleaning machine consisting of 4 different chemical solutions. Once cleaned the movement is re assembled and lubricated with up to seven different lubricants used, the movement is then calibrated. The watch case and bracelet is polished and refinished, cleaned in an ultrasonic tank then steam cleaned and dried. The watch case is then re assembled replacing all gaskets and worn case parts and then it is subjected to both pressure and vacuum testing depending its level of waterproofness specified. The movement is then re fitted inside the case and re pressure tested, final calibration is carried out and the completed watch is put on a wrist simulator for 48hrs for testing before release. A two year warranty is usually included with every service.

Complications such as chronographs etc. take longer and cost more to service as does older more worn out uncared for or rusted watches.

Birthstone meanings

Wednesday 05 August 2015

Share:

A birthstone is the "gemstone associated with the date of one's birth, the wearing of which is commonly thought to bring good luck or health. Supernatural powers have long been attributed by astrologers to certain gemstones.

January >> GARNET

Garnet, the birthstone for January,  signifies eternal friendship and trust and is the perfect gift for a friend.  Garnet, derived from the word granatum, means seed, and is called so because of the gemstone's resemblance to a pomegranate seed.  References to the gemstone dates back to 3100 B.C., when the Egyptians used garnets as inlays jewelry.  Garnet is the name of a group of minerals that comes in a rainbow of colors, from the deep red of the pyrope garnet to the vibrant green of tsavorites.  Today, the most important sources for garnet are Africa, Sri Lanka, and India.

February >> AMETHYST

Amethyst, the gemstone believed by ancient Greeks and Romans to ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus, also is said to keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted.  Throughout history, the gemstone has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numerous cultures.  English regalia were even decorated with amethysts during the Middle Ages to symbolize royalty. It has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numerous cultures. Amethyst is purple quartz, a beautiful blend of violet and red that can found in every corner of the earth. Historically, the finest amethyst were found in Russia and were featured in much royal European jewelry.  Today, while Brazil is the primary source of this gemstone, fine material can be found elsewhere, especially in Zambia.

March >> AQUAMARINE & BLOODSTONE

The two birthstones for March are aquamarine and bloodstone.

The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea.  This gemstone was believed to protect sailors, as well as to guarantee a safe voyage.  The serene color of aquamarine is said to cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and levelheaded.  Its pale, cool color beautifully complements spring and summer wardrobes.  Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color usually is more intense in larger stones.  This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique.

The second birthstone for March is bloodstone, a dark-green jasper flecked with vivid red spots of iron oxide.  This ancient stone was used by the Babylonians to make seals and amulets and was believed to have healing powers — especially for blood disorders.  It is sometimes called the martyr's stone as legend tells that it was created when drops of Christ's blood stained some jasper at the foot of the cross.  Generally found embedded in rocks or in riverbeds as pebbles, primary sources for this stone are India, Brazil, and Australia.

April >> DIAMOND

As the April  birthstone, diamonds are the ideal gift for a loved one.  And now you have more choices than ever. Get creative and give the ultimate gift of beauty: a fancy-color diamond. Fancy-color diamonds are natural, rare and truly exotic gem of the earth.  Diamonds in hues of yellow, red, pink, blue, and green range in intensity from faint to vivid and generally the more saturated the color, the higher the value. In fact, diamonds sparkling with intense color are rare and may be priced higher than a colorless diamond of equal size.  Because fancy-color diamonds are very desirable, color is sometimes introduced in a laboratory. These are correctly called color-treated diamonds. When purchasing a fancy-color diamond, the shopper should ask if any enhancements or treatments were used to improve its color and/or clarity.

May >> EMERALD

As the birthstone for May, the emerald, a symbol of rebirth, is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and

youth. Emerald, derived from the word smaragdus, meaning green in Greek, was mined in Egypt as early as 330 B.C. Today, most of the world’s emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan, and Zambia. The availability of

high-quality emerald is limited; consequently, treatments to improve clarity are performed regularly.

June >> PEARL, ALEXANDRITE & MOONSTONE

June counts three gems as birth stones, pearl, Alexandrite, and moonstone.Historically, pearls have been used as an adornment for centuries.  They were one of the favorite gem materials of the Roman Empire; later in Tudor England, the 1500s were known as the pearl age.  Pearls are unique as they are the only gems from living sea creatures and require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty. In the early 1900s, the first successful commercial culturing of round saltwater pearls began. Since the 1920s, cultured pearls have almost completely replaced natural pearls in the market.

A relatively modern gem, Alexandrite, was first discovered in Russia in 1831 during the reign of its namesake, Czar Alexander II, and is an extremely rare chrysoberyl with chameleon-like qualities.  Its color is a lovely green in both daylight and fluorescent light; it changes color to a purplish red in incandescent light.  Due to its rarity, some jewelers stock synthetic versions of this enchanting gemstone.  (Synthetic gemstones are man-made alternatives to the natural material, possessing the same physical, optical, and chemical properties as the natural gemstone.)

The third birthstone for June is the Moonstone.  It was given its name by the Roman natural historian Pliny, who wrote that moonstone's appearance altered with the phases of the moon — a belief that held until well after the sixteenth century.  A phenomenal gemstone, moonstones show a floating play of light (calledadularescence) and sometimes show either a multirayed star or a cat's eye. Considered a sacred stone in India, moonstones often are displayed on a background of yellow (a sacred color) and are believed to encapsulate within the stone a spirit whose purpose is to bring good fortune.  Part of the family of minerals called feldspar, moonstone occurs in many igneous and metamorphic rocks and comes in a variety of colors such as green, blue, peach, and champagne. The most prized moonstones are from Sri Lanka; India, Australia, the United States, Mayanmar, and Madagascar are also sources.

July >> RUBY

There’s no better way to demonstrate your love than by giving a ruby in celebration of a July birthday. Rubies arouse the senses, stir the imagination, and are said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love. Ruby is a variety of the gems speciescorundum. It is harder than any natural gemstone except diamond, which means a ruby is durable enough for everyday wear. Fine-quality ruby is extremely rare, and the color of the gem is most important to its value. The most prized color is a medium or medium dark vivid red or slightly purplish red. If the gem is too light or has too much purple or orange, it will be called a fancy-color sapphire.

August >> PERIDOT & SARDONYX

Two birthstones are available for August birthdays: Peridot and Sardonyx.

Peridot is said to host magical powers and healing properties to protect against nightmares and to bring the wearer power, influence, and a wonderful year.  As peridot is a gemstone that forms deep inside the Earth and brought to the surface by volcanoes, in Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes.  Today, most of the peridot supply comes from Arizona; other sources are China, Myanmar, and Pakistan.  This gemstone comes in several color variations ranging from yellowish green to brown, but most consumers are attracted to the bright lime greens and olive greens.  Peridot, in smaller sizes, often is used in beaded necklaces and bracelets.

Sardonyx  is a form of onyx and is recognized by its layers of reddish brown and white banding.  It was popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans who carried into battle talismans of sardonyx engraved with images of heroes such as Mars or Hercules, believing that this would bring courage and victory.  Because of its attractive banding, sardonyx has long been used to fashion cameos (carved raised figures) and intaglios (the reverse of cameos).  This gemstone is found throughout the world.  The most attractive specimens are found in India, but material also is mined in Czechoslovakia, Brazil, Uruguay, Germany, and in the United States.

September >> SAPPHIRE

Sapphire, the September birthstone, has been popular since the Middle Ages and, according to folklore, will protect your loved ones from envy and harm.  Medieval clergy wore sapphires to symbolize heaven, while commoners thought the gem attracted heavenly blessings.  Blue sapphires range from very light to very dark greenish or violetish blue, as well as various shades of pure blue.  The most prized colors are a medium to medium dark blue or slightly violetish blue.  Sapphire is a variety of the gem species corundum and occurs in all colors of the  rainbow.  Pink, purple, green, orange, or yellow corundum are known by their color (pink sapphire, green sapphire).  Ruby is the red variety of corundum.

October >> TOURMALINE & OPAL

October is another month with two birthstone choices – Tourmaline and Opal.

Tourmaline has become a favorite gemstone among jewelry designer, and gem collectors the world over. Since it is available in a wide variety of colors, it is ideally suited to almost anyone's taste. Tourmaline also is known for displaying several colors in the same gemstone.  These bi-color or tri-color gems are formed in many combinations; gemstones with clear color distinctions are highly prized.  One multi-color variety is known as watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink, and white colors bands; to resemble its namesake, the gemstone is cut into thin slices having a pink center, white ring, and green edge.  Tourmaline is found in many localities including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA.

The name opal derives from the Greek Opallos, meaning "to see a change (of color)."  Opals range in color from milky white to black with flashes of yellow, orange, green, red, and blue. An opal's beauty is the product of contrast between its color play and its background.  Opal is a formation of non-crystalline silica gel that seeped into crevices in the sedimentary strata. Through time and nature's heating and molding processes, the gel hardened into the form of opals. The opal is composed of particles closely packed in spherical arrangements. When packed together in a regular pattern, a three-dimensional array of spaces are created that give opal its radiance.

November >> TOPAZ & CITRINE

Topaz is a gemstone available in a rich rainbow of colors. Prized for several thousand years in antiquity, all yellow gems in antiquity were called topaz.Often confused with citrine quartz (yellow) and smoky quartz (brown), quartz and topaz are separate and unrelated mineral species. The most prized color of topaz is called Imperial topaz after the Russian Czars of the 1800s and features a magnificent orange body color with pinkish undertones. Topaz also comes in yellow, pink, purple, orange, and the many popular blue tones.

Citrine, the other birthstone for November is known as the "healing quartz". This golden gemstone is said to support vitality and health while encouraging and guiding hope, energy and warmth within the wearer. Citrine can be found in a variety of shades ranging from pastel yellow to dark brownish orange. It is one of the most affordable of gemstones and plentiful in nature. Citrine is found most frequently in Brazil, Bolivia, and Spain.

December >> TANZANITE, ZIRCON, TURQUOISE

Discovered in the late 1960s in Tanzania, and found exclusively in this tiny area of the world, tanzanite exhibits a rich violet-blue color for which the gemstone is treasured; often it is heat-treated to achieve this color.  Colors range from blue to purple, and tanzanites that are medium dark in tone, vivid in saturation, and slightly violet blue command premium prices.  As tanzanite can be less expensive than sapphire, it often was purchased as an alternative.  However, it has increased in popularity and now is valued more for its own beauty and brilliance than as a sapphire substitute.

Derived from the Arabic words zar and gun, meaning gold and color, zircon is found in a wide range of colors such as: blue, yellow, orange, brown, green, colorless, and red (the most prized color). For many years colorless zircon was used to imitate diamonds.  Folk wisdom grants zircon the power to relieve pain, whet the appetite, protect travelers from disease and injury, to ensure a warm welcome, and to prevent nightmares guaranteeing a deep, tranquil sleep.  Major sources of zircon are the Chanthaburi area of Thailand, the Palin area of Cambodia, and the southern part of Vietnam.

The name turquoise, from the French expression Pierre tourques or Turkish stone, originated in the thirteenth century and describes one of the oldest known gemstones. Turquoise varies in color from greenish blue, through robin's egg-blue, to sky blue shades and its transparency ranges from translucent  to opaque. Turquoise is plentiful and is available in a wide range of sizes. It is most often used for beads, cabochons, carvings, and inlays. Although its popularity fluctuates in fashion, it is a perennial favorite in the American Southwest.

Caring for your jewellery

Tuesday 14 July 2015

Share:

This guide aims to help you in keeping your jewellery looking as good as it did the day you bought it. Below we outline the best tips for your STERLING SILVER, GOLD, PLATINUM,DIAMONDS, OTHER PRECIOUS STONES and PEARLS

There are many cleaning products available to buy (and Keanes have a large selection) but there are still a few tips that make the job even easier - and even the odd old wives tale that we can recommend!

Sterling Silver

What is Sterling Silver?

Silver is a soft metal in its pure form, too soft to be used for jewellery and other items, so it's mixed with other metals to make it more durable. A popular silver mixture, called an alloy, is known as sterling silver.

Jewellery sold in Ireland cannot be marked or described as silver, solid silver, sterling silver, sterling, or using the abbreviation Ster. unless it contains at least 92.5 percent pure silver.
The minimum silver content can also be stated as 925 parts per thousand of pure silver, so you might see the figures 925 or 92.5 used to mark silver content. Copper is the most common metal used to round out the 7.5 percent alloy balance in sterling silver. It adds hardness to pure silver, but brings with it a tendency to tarnish--a darkening that occurs when sterling silver reacts with gases in the air or with other substances that it comes in contact with.

STORING STERLING SILVER JEWELLERY

Ideally you should store your sterling silver jewellery in tarnish prevention cloths or bags. The treated cloth slows down the tarnishing process and keeps the jewellery from rubbing against harder jewellery that can scratch it. Try to keep your sterling silver jewellery in a cool, dry place.

CLEANING YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELLERY

Clean sterling silver with a phosphate free detergent. A low abrasive cleaner, such as Hegarty’s Silver Polish, is a good choice for removing light tarnish. Some people use toothpaste to clean their sterling silver, but most silver experts caution against it because they feel toothpaste is too abrasive and leaves dulling scratches.

STERLING SILVER PATINA

Sterling silver jewellery that is worn continually often develops a lovely patina, a kind of glow combined with darkened areas. If you like the look, leave it alone. If you prefer a bright and shiny look for your sterling silver, use polish to restore the jewellery to its original appearance.

Gold

Although Gold comes in many different carat versions, the principles of cleaning are the same.

Always keep gold jewellery in a box lined with satin or velvet. Pouches are a bad idea if you’re caring for gold jewellery, because the gold pieces will rub together and wear away over time. If you have more than one item in a box, it’s a good idea to wrap the smaller pieces in tissue paper to guard against scratches.

Along with proper storage, cleaning plays a crucial part in caring for gold jewellery. You can use a soft-bristled brush for the detailed designs, and very soft cleaning cloths other times. You should use warm water and detergent-free soap, or specific gold cleaning products. Once in a while, you may want to drop your gold jewellery into boiling water and a pinch of baking soda. Leave it in for only half a minute, and wipe the piece immediately after pulling it form the water. Perform this process on one piece at a time.

There are other things to remember while caring for gold jewellery. Remember to remove all pieces before entering swimming pools! Chlorine erodes this soft metal. It’s also a risk because diamonds and other stones can easily fall out of their settings. Don’t let household cleaners or other harsh chemicals come into contact with your gold; they reduce the lustre of the yellow metal.

Platinum

Store platinum jewellery separate from other items so that they do not scratch or get scratched by them. Place your jewellery in a jewellery box or a chamois bag.

Clean your platinum jewellery periodically. This will ensure its fine appearance and will help it last.

Clean platinum in the same way you clean other fine jewellery - using pre-packaged jewellery cleaner or by soaking it in a mild solution of 50% ammonia and 50% warm water and then gently rubbing it with a soft cloth. Note that harsh chemicals such as ammonia should not be used on gemstones other than diamonds because it may damage them - consult a jewellery professional in-person for specific guidance in this matter.

Have your platinum jewellery polished and cleaned by a qualified jeweller twice a year and more often if scratches appear. Remember that all metal can be scratched, however with platinum the metal has merely been displaced.

Take your platinum jewellery to a qualified jeweller twice per year for inspection. Only allow a trained professional jeweller to work on your platinum jewellery! Adjustments, resizing, polishing and cleaning of your platinum jewellery should be provided by a trained bench jeweller.

Be aware that over time platinum develops a natural patina that many people prefer over the "just polished" appearance of platinum. When this happens to your platinum jewellery you may take it to a qualified jeweller and have the item polished for that "high gloss" look or simply ask them not to remove the patina if that is your preference.

Do not wear your platinum or other fine jewellery when doing home cleaning, gardening, or other types of heavy work or manual labour. Do not wear your platinum or other fine jewellery when working with bleach or other harsh chemicals. Although the chemicals may not affect the platinum, they may discolour diamonds and other gemstones and can cause an allergic reaction with your skin if trapped between the ring and your finger.

Diamonds

Diamonds Are Not Invincible

Although a diamond is the hardest substance known on earth, it still requires attention and care. If a diamond did not have a weakness, it could not be fashioned at all. That weakness is its perfect "cleavage", or the tendency to split along its perfect crystal planes. This makes the diamond susceptible to cracking or chipping with a sharp blow. A good setting prevents most damage, but reasonable care is essential to enjoy your investment for many years. Below are some important tips you should know.

PROTECT THE SETTING

Take your diamond off and put it in a safe place when washing dishes (do not put it next to the sink because the open drain is an invitation for trouble)

Avoid wearing your diamond while gardening or during household repairs that might scratch the setting or damage the claws that keep the stone secure.

CHEMICALS

Exposure during ordinary wear to perspiration and household chemicals, like chlorine and hairspray can accumulate and dull the surface of a diamond. Periodic cleaning is crucial if you want to keep it brilliant and prismatic.

CLEANING

We recommend a gentle scrubbing with a soft-bristle brush in a solution of plain alcohol diluted in warm water. Periodic ultrasonic cleanings by your local jeweller are also recommended to clean hard-to-reach areas under the settings.

CHECK THE CLAWS

Be sure to take your diamond ring to a trusted local jeweller to check for loose claws. You may have to pay a little to have the claws retipped once a year or so, but it will be well worth it. Claws can break or weaken with normal wear and it would be heartbreaking to lose your precious diamond.

Other Precious Stones

Most Diamonds and sapphires will be fine in an ultrasonic cleaner but many other gems may not be: when in doubt, leave them out especially leave out, Emeralds, Tanzanite, heavily included Rubies, and Opals.

Opaque gemstones like lapis lazuli, turquoise, malachite require special care. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner and never use any chemical solution. These gem materials should just be wiped clean gently with a moist cloth. These gemstones can be porous and may absorb chemicals, even soap.

Note :( Ultrasonic cleaners are very good for rope and chain jewellery and may be used in conjunction with Original Diamond and Precious Jewellery cleaner as the liquid placed in the ultrasonic with excellent results).

Pearls

Caring for Pearls also can apply to Amber & other Amorphous or Organic Gems

Clean regularly avoid excessive contact with perfume, dirt and skin oil. Remember to always put your pearls on last, after you have applied makeup and perfume.

To clean Pearls, use only recommended jewellery and pearl cleaner or a mild, non-detergent soap, lukewarm water and soft cloth, clean but do not soak, rinse well in clean warm water and allow to properly dry preferably flat on a towel or moisture absorbing surface. Original Diamond and Precious Jewellery cleaner is pearl safe just follow directions and remember do not soak pearls in any liquid for more than a few seconds even when rinsing.

Never store in an airtight container or plastic bags they can deteriorate, some plastics may even emit chemicals that can harm the pearls.

Protect from temperature extremes and chemicals, such as alcohol and hairspray, as these can erode the surface.

Wear your pearls often as they thrive on your skin.

Avoid soaking in chlorinated water or any liquid.

Re-string annually with a knot between each pearl.

Storing them for long periods can dry them out and fracture the surface.

Store your pearls flat, as opposed to hanging them, thus avoiding stretching the thread prematurely.

The Four C's

Thursday 28 May 2015

Share:

Determining a diamond’s quality can be complicated and confusing - especially when your start considering the "4 C's".

We hope this guide to the 4 C's makes your experience of purchasing a diamond ring all the more enjoyable by ensuring you have the knowledge and understanding of what makes a diamond ring so special.

Colour

Diamonds are graded by colour with all the major international laboratories having agreed to a standard 23 colour grading system. Colours are graded from totally colourless to light yellow.

The closer a diamond approaches colourless, the rarer and more valuable it becomes.

The highest colour grade is D; for a diamond with no colour at all. The differences from one grade to the next are extremely subtle; while most diamonds appear colourless or “white” many display hints of colour when examined in the lab, yet these colours typically would go unnoticed to the naked eye.

Diamonds with a strong, pure colour are extremely rare and are called “fancies”. These diamonds can be found in colours including pink, blue, yellow, green, orange and even black.

Carat

The size/weight of a diamond is measured in Carats. One carat is divided into 100 “points”, so that a diamond of 75 points, weighs 0.75 of a carat.

Whilst carat weight is the most obvious factor when assessing the value of a diamond, two diamonds of equal size can have very unequal values, depending on the cut, clarity or colour.

Bigger isn’t necessarily better – diamonds of high quality can be found in all size ranges.

1.00 ct

0.75 ct

0.50 ct

0.25 ct

Cut

How a diamond is cut is an important consideration; the better the cut, the more the diamond sparkles. In the hands of a master craftsman, a diamond will make the most of the light, giving it a dazzling brilliance.

If perfectly cut, light entering the diamond will be refracted internally from facet to facet before
emerging through the top of the stone, producing dazzling “fire” that is unmatched by any other
gemstone. An ideal cut diamond makes full use of the light entering it, maximising its brilliance and “fire”.

Cut can also refer to the shape of the diamond itself. The Brilliant or Round cut shape is the most popular and is used in most diamond jewellery. There are many other shapes available with other popular choices being Princess, Emerald and Oval. At Keanes we have a large selection of shapes available including those shown in the diagram below as well as Radiant, Cushion and Asscher cuts.

The shape of a diamond chosen is largely a matter of personal preference.

Clarity

Diamonds are formed naturally and as a consequence most of them contain tiny blemishes; also known as inclusions. The number of inclusions, their size and where they are located; all influence how light passes through the diamond.

The clarity of a diamond is determined by the viewing the gem under magnification. The less inclusions a diamond has the more beautiful the diamond will be, thus it will be rarer and more valuable.

Patek Philippe, Geneva

Here is some detailed information on the upcoming Patek philippe grand exhibtion in the Saatchi Gallery London.

Patek Philippe brings historical timepieces to the Watch Art Patek Philippe Grand Exhibition London 2015

Patek Philippe will bring more than 100 historical watches, which are part of the Patek Philippe Museum collection, to the Watch Art Patek Philippe Grand Exhibition London which will take place from May 27th to June 7th this year at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

Visitors will be able to see for the first time in London iconic historical timepieces such as:
. The Antoine Norbert de Patek’s watch
.The Patek Philippe Duke de Regla, a minute repeating pocket watch with Petite Sonnerie and Westminster Chime on five bells
. The first Swiss wristwatch made by Patek Philippe in 1868, sold to a Countess of Hungary
. The ca.1830 tableclock in the shape of a cage with five singing-birds and music

These special watches will be in the Grand Exhibition in the Patek Philippe Museum Room which is a recreation of the company’s Museum in Geneva. Very much like the gallery in Geneva, this room will be divided into two sections. In the first section there will be some of the greatest timepieces spanning the last five centuries, including 16th century earliest portable watches ever made. In the second section of this ‘Temple to Watchmaking’, historical Patek Philippe timepieces dating back to the beginning of the company will be on display.

The Exhibition will be open to the public, free of charge, from 9:00 to 19:00 weekdays and Saturdays, and from 10:00 to 16:00 on Sundays. No bookings or tickets are required.

Tips for finding the right ring size

Tips for getting your partner's ring size

Hoping to pop the big question but don’t know your partner’s ring size? Here are a few tips that will help find the answers without spoiling the surprise!

Rings can be sized upwards or downwards but we would always like to get the size correct to within 2 sizes especially if there are diamonds set on the band.

Here are a few ways to help you get an approximate finger size to us without them knowing:

  • When they’re away, temporarily “borrow” a ring that they wear regularly and trace the inner part of the ring on a piece of paper. Be sure to return the ring immediately and then bring the drawing into our store

  • Take their ring and place it on one of your fingers. Draw a line around your finger where the ring falls, then leave the rest up to us!

  • Use a small soap to make an impression of the ring, be sure to wipe the soap residue off the ring and return it to its proper place. You can then bring in the piece of soap to us and we will be happy to measure it!

  • Take the ring and slide it down a tapered candle. Mark the candle where it falls.

  • P.S Always make sure to delete your browser history when researching engagement rings!

  • Now all that’s left is to do is get down on one knee!

The Sound of Time

Thursday 30 October 2014

Share:

To pay tribute to its 175th anniversary, Patek Philippe created a collection of limited-edition commemorative timepieces, and one of them stands out in particular. It is the so far most complicated wristwatch of the eminent family-owned watchmaking companies and decidedly one of the world's most elaborate wristwatches. This is due not only to the number of complications involved but also to the horological degrees of complexity, two of which have been added to the annals of watchmaking for the first time. Moreover, the Grandmaster Chime is the first double-face wristwatch presented by Patek Philippe that can be worn with either dial facing up: the one that focuses on the time and the sonnerie, the other dedicated to the full instantaneous perpetual calendar.

The Grandmaster Chime is delivered in a chest made of Makassar ebony and 17 further wood species. It is decorated with intarsia and gold inlays. Apart from the watch, it contains the accompanying documentation and a commemorative medal in gold that depicts milestones of the manufacture's history as well as portraits of the company's presidents from the Stern family since 1932.

The Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime celebrates the 175th anniversary of the manufacture in a limited edition of seven watches. Six of them will be sold to long-standing collectors of Patek Philippe timepieces. The seventh one will find a place of honor at the Patek Philippe Museum where it can be admired by the public.

TUDOR Arrives at Keanes Jewellers

Thursday 30 October 2014

After an absence of just over a decade, Tudor watches returned to the UK & Ireland in September 2014

TUDOR is a premium Swiss watchmaking brand appealing to people with an acute sense of style, a desire to be different and uncompromising quality expectations.

The origins of the brand date back to 1926, when ‘the Tudor’ was first registered on behalf of the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf. He created the company Montres TUDOR SA in 1946 to offer watches with the quality and dependability of Rolex, but at a more accessible price point. As a result, Hans Wilsdorf envisioned 60 years in advance what is known today as accessible luxury.

As it evolved, the TUDOR brand produced watches that differed from Rolex in their appearance and functions. This path of differentiation and development of a characteristic retro-chic style has led to the distinct TUDOR product identity of today:  it is complementary to Rolex and appeals to a different customer group and market segment.

TUDOR watches are 100% Swiss made offering matchless value for money in the €1,770 to €5,090 segment.  TUDOR watches launched at Keanes Jewellers Cork on September 19th 2014.

Distinctive features of TUDOR watches include:

Unique materials for the straps such as high-quality artisanal fabric straps, Alcantara, aged leather and rubber, which give the watches an edgy and singular appeal and contribute to the pleasure of wearing them
Unique materials for the case, bezel and bracelet such as titanium and  high-tech monobloc ceramic
Unique features such as the Advisor’s alarm clock mechanism, developed and patented by Tudor, and the Grantour Fly-back Chronograph function

Exquisite Diamonds visit Keanes Cork

Thursday 19 June 2014

A very special collection of diamond rings will go on show in the windows of Keanes Jewellers Cork between June 16th – 23rd 2014. The Skye Collection has been exclusively designed and developed by a talented team of award winning designers, goldsmiths and diamond merchants all of whom have a collective drive for making a remarkable product.

The DNA of this collection is the “Skye Rim” which gives a mirrored brilliance to enhance the centre stone and delicately scalloped diamond shoulders for a classic vintage look.

Working mainly in Platinum and using this rare, white metal to mirror the brilliance of fine diamonds, these styles have an exceptional finish and are designed to stand the test of time. Each certificated central diamond has been specifically chosen and sourced from the top cutting houses in the world and individually picked for their outstanding qualities by diamond experts.

From the very beginning of the design process where Computer Aided Design is used to visualise the collection in photorealistic models, through to the techniques used by “intuitive” goldsmiths, attention to detail is paramount.

These Goldsmiths utilise several unique, expert setting techniques to fashion the setting and ensure that the diamond reveals its maximum brilliance. The central diamond is then often accentuated by perfectly matched smaller diamonds, set into the gallery or on the shoulders of the shank.

Whilst Bridal jewellery and Diamond engagement rings are as subject to the changing tides of fashion , the vintage trend remains strong and these styles are all about glamour, sparkle, detail and fine design - with a modern edge.

Patek Philippe is delighted to present the Watch Art Patek Philippe Grand Exhibition London 2015 project, which will take place from May 27th to June 7th 2015 at the Saatchi Gallery in London. The exhibition will celebrate Patek Philippe’s tradition of high-precision watch manufacturing, an insight into the company’s 175 year history as well as the its heritage in the domain of haute horlogerie. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the world of the last privately family owned Geneva watch company from the inside.

Artisans working live and watchmaker demonstrations are some of the activities taking place during the event next year. There will be 12 rooms (including the Immersion room, the Film Theatre room, the Current Collection room, the Museum room, the Grand Complications Room, the 175th Collection Gallery room and the Rare Handcrafts Gallery room) throughout the entire Gallery and visitors will have access to over 400 exceptional pieces in a space of 2,200 sq. metres.

The Watch Art Grand Exhibition will bring to a close the Patek Philippe 175th anniversary celebrations, which started on 1st May this year. The event will incorporate the commemorative timepieces which will be presented later this year to the world and people will have the chance to experience these great moments in history for the company.

According to Jasmina Steele, the International Communication & Public Relations Director of Patek Philippe, the aim of the Grand Exhibition is to recreate places and elements of the company that will provide an unforgettable experience for each visitor offering as near as possible, the experience Patek Philippe guests have when they visit the company’s manufacture in Geneva, The Museum or the historical building in the Rue du Rhone. “We really want visitors to know about the history of horology through our own history and leave the Exhibition with a greater general knowledge of watchmaking”.

Mark Hearn, the Managing Director for Patek Philippe UK, says: “We are very proud of hosting this magnificent event in London, a multicultural city and a hub for business and tourists who come to visit from all over the world. If we can inspire and help visitors to understand and appreciate watchmaking, we will have achieved our objective”.

The Exhibition will open to the public, free of charge, from 10:00 to 19:00 weekdays and Saturdays, and from 10:00 to 16:00 on Sundays, with guided tours available on a daily basis and in different languages. Schools trips are also part of the programme during the whole period the Exhibition is open, and the British School of Watchmaking will be part of that education programme.

Question: Tell us what your 'song' is, and how it became your song!

Feb 11th Winner: Tara Ní Bheacháin

Question: What does your other half do to brighten up your day?

A big splurge on an engagement ring isn't possible - every girl would love that big sparkler on there finger - but unfortunately it's not possible for many couples like us out there - there is always some bill popping through the letter box! It is the little acts of love and the cute meaningful gestures that mean the world to me and are free - (money cannot buy happiness) and anyway I don't need him to pay crazy money for a bunch of roses he shows me every day that he loves me by just being there and telling me how much he loves me and our beautiful son and can read me like a book he always knows how to put a smile on my face whether it's the surprise massage after a long day at work or just the random cup of tea after tidying up - or as simple as just putting the dishes away !!! 10 years on our love is still as strong as ever and never fails to brighten up my day and for that I feel very lucky

Feb 12th Winner: Ann Lynch

Question: What's your favourite thing about your partner that makes them unique?

My favorite thing about my partner is the little things he does for me like put up with my moods... giving me cuddles because I've had a hard day at work... knowing I need some time to myself to relax and spend time with my friends and family... driving me home from work on his day off... getting up at 7am on his day off to drive me to work again just because Im so tired.

I know in my heart he would do anything for me and I would do anything for him just because we love and care about each other so much that nothing is to big/small for either of us.

Taking part in this competition I think has made me realise even more how much we both love each other and some of the best memories we have had over our 2 year relationship with many many more ahead of us for the future!!

Good Luck to everyone taking part

A Merry Christmas this year at Keanes

Monday 23 December 2013

Keanes Jewellers stores in Cork, Limerick and Killarney have been buzzing with very merry Christmas shoppers this year! Following a difficult number of years, Keanes have seen a definite uplift in Christmas trade this year. Despite the poor weather conditions, the mood amongst city centre shoppers is certainly more upbeat. Patrick Keane said, "Shoppers are definitely in better spirits this year and there is a real buzz and atmosphere back in our stores which is uplifting to see."

Some of the most popular gifts this year have been the fashion forward watches from Michael Kors and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Mi Moneda jewellery is another favourite, which are a range of necklaces with interchangable coins to match customer's mood and outfit.

Customers have certainly planned ahead this year with a notable growth in queries and special requests both online and in store in the weeks running up to Christmas. "Shoppers are doing their research and making an informed choice, this has meant that our website and Facebook page are now even more important.", said Patrick.

All in all Keanes are delighted to see the hustle and bustle return to the city and would like to wish all of their customers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Irish family-owned Jewellers Keanes of Cork, Limerick and Killarney have won the Marketing Campaign of the Year for 2013 at the UK and Ireland Jewellery Awards. The winners were revealed at a Gala Dinner in the Natural History Museum in London last Thursday night 4th July.

The fourth-generation Jewellers beat off competition from global brands such as Citizen Watches, Pandora, Swarovsky and Bremont with their “Start Your Own Story” integrated marketing campaign. The judges said: “Start Your Own Story was a simple, emotional statement that worked into a complete, targeted campaign that permeated all levels of marketing strategy from encouraging people to share their stories on social media to topical media advertising. The mix of tried and tested tactics and awareness-raising events such as a ballroom-dancing flash mob to get media attention produced a great campaign that really engaged with the public and customers.”

The winning marketing campaign was led by Keanes Marketing Manager Caron McMahon “It’s a fantastic honour to be recognised by these the Oscars of Jewellery Awards,” said Caron. “We have a wide ranging customer base and it was vitally important that our new campaign had the flexibility and creativity to connect with all of them. “Start Your Own Story” fit perfectly and works across all jewellery buying occasions. It really connected.”

Pat Keane said after the awards: This is a remarkable achievement, and it shows that when you reflect a brand that has three generations of tradition and stories, customers connect. Start Your Own Story is an extension of the stories that we’ve been hearing and cherishing for the last 60 years in all our stores.”

The UK & Ireland Jewellery Awards 2013 is established as the premium jewellery awards in the UK and Ireland and is known for its fiercely independent judging process. Keanes Jewellers competed with other retailers who are all based in the UK. There are 25 members on the judging panel from across the industry with fourteen categories as part of the awards listing.

Keanes Welcomes the Chinese New Year With Colorful Limited Edition Swatch Watch

Thursday 24 January 2013

Share:

Keanes Jewellers is proud to present the Legend of the White Snake, a special Swatch watch created in advance of the imminent Chinese New Year celebrations.

Set to begin February 10, 2013, the traditional 15-day Chinese New Year celebrations bring family and friends together to enjoy a variety of festive events. Every year, Swatch contributes to the Chinese New Year festivities by creating a limited edition watch – this year being the White Snake.

The watch itself has artfully drawn serpents and brilliant colours evoking traditional Chinese decorative arts, finely woven silks and embroidered fabrics. The white dial is adorned with Arabic numerals in a variety of colours, and the hour and minute hands appear to curl and twist like snakes in motion. The snake’s multiple colours re-appear in a bright floral variation on the special packaging, a colourful box with a transparent watch case and the legend of white snake wrapped up inside.

Popular tradition in China associates each year of the 12-year zodiac cycle with an animal, and persons born in a particular year are said to share certain attributes with the zodiac animal. As the key symbol of Chinese Spirit, persons born in the Year of the Snake are thought likely to be smart, flexible and intelligent. The Snake is also believed to bring good fortune and wisdom to everyone born under its sign.

Available in Keanes Jewellers Cork, Limerick and Killarney for €61.

Keanes Jewellers Now Accepting UnionPay Cards

Thursday 29 March 2012

Share:

Keanes Jewellers are delighted to announce that from today we are the first retailer in Munster now accepting UnionPay, the preferred payment method for Chinese customers with approximately 2.3 million of the cards in circulation worldwide.

With the London Olympics on the horizon in July, millions of Chinese visitors are expected to arrive in Europe and for these visitors shopping is an important part of their trip. With luxury goods in particular being in high demand, Keanes are hoping to attract some of these high spending shoppers to their stores over the tourist season.

Explaining the decision to start accepting UnionPay cards, Patrick Keane, Director of Keanes Jewellers said “Foreign visitors to Ireland are becoming an increasingly important part of our business. With prices on luxury goods in both Ireland and Europe are substantially lower than in Asia, Chinese customers are a key target for us. With an average of around 100 million Chinese travelling outside of their country annually, it makes sense to facilitate them by accepting their only domestic bank card.”

So if you’re a lady who plans to “leap” into action then make sure to pick up a copy of the 2012 edition of the Little Book of Romantic Proposals at Keanes Jewellers which is full of romantic, traditional and unique proposal ideas including surprising him when he least expects it, such as at a sporting event while his favourite team is playing.

KEANES ANNOUNCED AS ONLY IRISH FINALIST FOR 2011 JEWELLERY AWARDS

Tuesday 17 May 2011

IRELAND & UK’S INDEPENDENT JEWELLER OF THE YEAR GOES ON TO BE ONLY IRISH FINALIST FOR 2011 AWARDS

Keanes Jewellers is the only Irish company to be shortlisted for the UK Jewellery Awards 2011 beating off stiff competition from across the British Isles. The family owned Munster-based business, has reached the final stage of the awards again for 2011, the third year in a row to reach the shortlist, and having won the prestigious award last year.

Keanes Jewellers has been in business for over 60 years and has stores in Cork, Limerick and Killarney carrying exclusive brands including Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier, John Rocha, Paul Costelloe, Pandora as well as their exclusive Keanes Collection. The UK Jewellery Awards 2011 take place on July 14th in Grosvenor House Hotel, London, where Keanes Jewellers will compete with 5 other finalists, all UK based, in the hopes of keeping the title of Independent Retailer of the Year for another year.

Gerard Keane, Director of Keanes Jewellers said: “We were extremely honoured to be shortlisted once again for this coveted title. Having won the Independent Retailer of the Year last year, it demonstrates our superb customer service and expertise that Keanes has become known for throughout Munster, and indeed Ireland and the UK. Retailing through a recession such as the one we are experiencing in Ireland is difficult for small, independent businesses like ours and credit is due to our 50 excellent staff who have helped bring us to the finals of these prestigious awards once again.”

The UK Jewellers Awards 2011 is long established as the premium awards in the jewellery industry in the UK and Ireland and is known for its fiercely independent judging process. “Everyone who made the shortlist should feel so proud of themselves. This year we had more entrants than ever and all of them were of an extremely high quality, which made the job of shortlisting even more difficult for this year’s judges,” said Laura McCreddie, editor of Retail Jeweller. These awards have always been the most prestigious in the industry and I think the calibre of people on this year’s shortlist is testament to that.”

Keanes Jewellers will now undertake a store visit by representatives of the awards committee and will undergo a formal interview as well as mystery shopping trips in the next few weeks which are all part of the judging process.

Keanes Jewellers are one of Ireland’s top jewellers. Gerard Keane, one of the company directors has held the position of Master Warden of the Company of Goldsmiths of Dublin three times, which is testament to the expert knowledge of the business.

Their superb customer service has always set them apart, combined with their vast collection of diamonds, jewellery and their prestigious watch servicing department, highly-trained goldsmiths and engraving team. The retailer has previously won the Cork Business of the Year Awards and celebrated 60 years in business in 2008.
